Carnegie House is a highly rated boutique hotel celebrated for its luxurious, meticulously clean rooms and exceptional service, largely driven by its upscale on-site restaurant. However, isolated reports indicate inconsistent room maintenance and cleanliness issues, which occasionally detract from the overall 4-star experience advertised.
I have 3 words- Abigail, Alanna, & Bill. Visiting Penn state and Bellafonte from NYC, and I cannot say enough about the staff here. Aside from the rooms being absolutely stunning and meticulously clean (they look exactly like all the pictures you see on their page, which is rare nowadays), Everyone is so welcoming and more than hospitable. From a room request I made before arriving, to check in and dinner at the on-site restaurant/bar, to the overnight front desk- everything was spot on. We couldn’t ask for more; everyone here has gone above and beyond. Hopefully my niece will be attending Penn State. If so, we have found our spot!!
Room was super nice, spotless, beautifully appointed, modern, quiet and comfortable. Service all around was exceptional - friendly, professional, responsive. I had dinner in the restaurant at the inn (Stonhouse Pub/Grace Restaurant) and it was exquisite. I absolutely loved the authentic Italian dishes that complemented a nice selection of traditional items such as steak and seafood. I'm Italian and ordered the carbonara, which was true to the Italian recipe - guanciale, egg, cheese. The pasta was certainly hand-made and was perfectly cooked - al dente. (I understand an Italian chef from the sister property in Lucca, Italy introduced these items. Fantastic!!) Great hotel and restaurant with excellent service and attention to detail. Thank you!
The Carnegie House is a charming boutique hotel with professional staff and attention to detail. There are 21 rooms that are quiet, sophisticated, spacious and recently remodeled. The location is beside a golf course in a secluded area near Penn State University. We enjoy staying here for anniversaries and birthdays, especially since there is an amazing upscale restaurant on-site. Highly recommend.
Stayed here a few weeks ago , my wife and I loved it. Beautiful room and the bathroom was big and so nice. Staff was friendly and happy as well. We will definitely stay here again if needed while traveling.
Wow, we were blown away by the beautiful suite. Luxury touches throughout including velvet soft wallpaper, reading chairs with tiny coffee tables, premium shower products, cozy beds and so many other designer finishes and materials it had us dreaming of our own remodel. The room had modern technology and service was pleasant. Highly recommend!
Definitely Not a 4-Star Experience I travel constantly for work and usually stick to basic hotels, but I decided to splurge at Carnegie House for my last week in State College. Unfortunately, it didn’t live up to the “4-star” label at all. Cleanliness was the biggest issue. The room was extremely dusty, especially behind the nightstands—like it hadn’t been touched in ages. The shower overflowed because the drain barely works, and the grout is filthy. There’s also a section of caulk missing on a tile in front of the shower. I purposely don’t have housekeeping come in most of the time, but I knew from the start this room wasn’t cleaned well. There’s been a Reese’s Piece under the bed since day one, and I left it there as a test. Even after I did request service—after using every towel in the room to mop up the flooded bathroom—nothing was actually cleaned. Toiletries I used weren’t replaced The washcloth left in the shower stayed there Pink gel on the bathroom tile… still there No vacuuming Basically the bed was made and towels swapped. That’s it. For a place calling itself 4-star, the upkeep and cleaning felt more like a 2-star property. Now, the positive: The on-site restaurant, Grace, is genuinely good. The staff cares, the food is solid, and the margaritas were honestly the highlight of my stay. My only gripe is that there’s no microwave in the room—which feels intentional so guests rely on the restaurant. When I asked how to heat up leftovers, I was told to take my food downstairs so the front desk could have the kitchen warm it. I had a box of pizza… so that wasn’t happening. I did try the steak one night. It wasn’t bad, just forgettable—not what I’d expect from a 4-star hotel restaurant. They did comp a drink after I mentioned it, which I appreciated. Bottom line: I’ve been in State College for a 13-week contract and saved this place for last because I was excited to try it. I ended up disappointed. For the price and the rating they advertise, the experience just wasn’t worth it. I really wanted to like Carnegie House, but it needs major attention to cleanliness and room maintenance before I’d ever consider coming back.
I’d like to take this opportunity to thank your executive chef and his staff for making our meal a 5 Star event. You are blessed to have him. My ribeye was cooked to perfection and my wife’s ahi tuna was the most tasteful she’s ever had. We look forward to visiting Grace Restaurant whenever we’re in the area. We whole heartedly give two thumbs up and a five star rating.
Wonderful place to stay! The rooms were spotless and cozy, and the staff was outstanding. Sam at the front desk was incredibly helpful and courteous. Grace restaurant is downstairs and our meals were very good.
We absolutely loved the Carnegie House. The staff was seriously the friendliest and most helpful we have ever experienced in the hotel setting. The room was beautifully decorated and comfortable. Lovely sitting areas both inside and out of the hotel. The only thing I wish is that we could move it to a more exciting location. State College does not have very much to do in the area unless you golf or see a Penn State game(we weren't doing either of those).
Not the place to go if you’re wanting to take a step back in time. The hotel is fine, it just isn’t the nod to the era they want it to be. Guest service and location are great, as was the cleanliness of the room. We were offered complimentary water at check-in and the room itself was spotless. The room had a Keurig with decent coffee and enough cream for two cups. The biggest reason I wouldn’t rate 5 stars is because they missed the mark on the styling. A main draw for this hotel is its aesthetic, which felt cheap, poorly executed, and like an afterthought once we got there. The only reminders inside the room of the hotel’s theme were a fake rotary phone and some plaid pillows. At $500 per night, the in-room blandness could be had elsewhere. Reservations we had for breakfast fell through when we found the Grace restaurant closed and empty at our arrival time, so we checked out. Edit after hotel’s reply: Unfortunately, the Carnegie website listed Grace as open for breakfast or brunch, and allowed us to make confirmed reservations
