The Hilton Garden Inn State College generally receives positive feedback, with highlights including friendly and attentive staff, comfortable rooms, and a convenient location near Penn State. However, concerns regarding amenity functionality (particularly the pool) and inconsistent food offerings have been raised.
Easy to find on E College Ave and not so close to a highway that you can hear the noise. Inside was bright and modern, I wasn't expecting it to be in such good shape! Lobby and room was nice, friendly staff and a great breakfast.
Average hotel. The reason for this review is the restaurant situation. The dinner service was just in half the front lobby. The prices for dinner are what I would consider to be outrageous for average to below average food. Then the breakfast. They don’t offer complimentary breakfast. The breakfast they do offer is atrocious. The service was god awful, 7 people in the “restaurant” and the food came out cold. Point is, the food situation here is all wrong. Stay somewhere else, go out for dinner, and enjoy a decent complimentary breakfast when you get up in the morning.
Christina was amazing! All I had to do was send her a quick text, and toothbrushes/toothpaste were brought up to my room immediately, she took lots of pictures for us in the lobby, and made sure all of our suits and dresses were spotless before we headed off to our event. Her customer service and attention to detail made the stay 10 times better. Thank you Chris!!
My stay had several avoidable issues, most of which relate to the property not delivering what it advertises. First, the driveway entrance is extremely narrow and easy to miss. Approaching it at night or in traffic, you practically have to crawl to avoid driving past it. For a Hilton-brand property, the access layout is surprisingly cramped and inconvenient. The main reason I booked this location was the indoor pool, and this was ultimately the biggest disappointment. The pool is not a real usable hotel pool—it’s extremely small, roughly 15 feet by 15 feet in total, with a very short 3-foot section and a small 5-foot section. It feels more like a decorative basin than a functional amenity. To make matters worse, the water was ice-cold and the room itself was not heated. The air was freezing, the water was colder, and the pool was effectively unusable in winter. When a hotel advertises an indoor pool in Pennsylvania, the reasonable expectation is that it will be heated and useable year-round. This one was not even close. The exterior signage also advertises a “spa,” but there is no hot tub, no whirlpool, and no spa services of any kind. It is just the tiny, freezing pool described above. The advertising creates an impression the hotel simply does not deliver on. The gym is a single small room with very basic equipment. It works for a quick session, but there’s nothing notable about it and it doesn’t match the expectations set by the brand. Breakfast pricing was another issue. Unless you pay the additional fee for the breakfast-included rate, you will spend around $20 per person for what is a very average meal. The food quality itself was fine, but nowhere near the value implied by the price tag. For the same cost, you can get a better breakfast at a local diner, or stay at another chain where breakfast is included. Overall, the hotel looks appealing online, but the amenities—especially the pool and the so-called “spa”—do not match what is advertised. In winter, the pool is effectively unusable, and the breakfast value is extremely poor. I would not choose this location again unless these issues are addressed.
I stayed here while visiting my mom who is on hospice, and Chelsea at the front desk went above and beyond, giving me a little gift package with the sweetest card showing compassion and care. It put the biggest smile on my face to receive such a kind gesture during such a hard time. Besides the amazing service, the hotel room is clean and comfortable. I will def stay here again, and I can’t wait to give Chelsea a big hug next time I see her. :)
I’ve stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn State College several times now, and I’m not sure why I waited this long to write a review — they truly deserve the recognition! Every stay has been excellent. The staff are kind, welcoming, and always go out of their way to help. The rooms are spotless and comfortable, and the whole hotel has such a warm, relaxing vibe. The on-site restaurant is great, and the little lobby shop is super convenient. I also love the outdoor seating areas where you can relax and enjoy the weather. From the cozy indoor fireplace to the modern décor, this place feels like a home away from home. You really can’t find a better value in the area!
Nice hotel with clean rooms and a modern bathroom. Friendly staff, and plenty of free parking. There are complimentary drinks in the nice lobby, but breakfast is not included in your stay.
Hotel has no hot tub in the pool area. I assumed it did after seeing photos of the hotel via Google. Also pool was super cold. Hard to review hotel as it is under renovations. Would be better to try hotel after renovation. But do have to say staff were so nice and the location is great to Penn St campus.
My boyfriend and I came up for the weekend and we were so relieved the hotel was clean and nice. We had been up previously at a different “hotel” and was absolutely disgusted, but here everything was wonderful. The room was so spacious and clean, the bathrooms were clean, service was fast, the pool was clean and heated, the restaurant was nice. Overall great experience and would absolutely come back again.
